Rupert Posner
Back to our peopleGlobal Director of Energy
Rupert runs The Climate Group’s global energy program, which is working with business and government to advance the uptake of clean energy options. Rupert is one of the longest serving members of The Climate Group, having founded our Australian office in March 2005. There he developed a world-first initiative to track greenhouse gas emissions from energy in Australian states on a weekly basis and was a frequent media spokesperson. He moved to New York in early 2011 to take up this role.
Rupert's experience in developing environmental policies and communications strategies for industry, government and the environment movement spans almost two decades, including senior political advising roles. He helped Greenpeace achieve one of its biggest global environmental victories, successfully persuading Coca-Cola to change its global refrigeration policies so as to phase out the use of greenhouse-polluting HFC gases. Rupert played a critical role in the establishment and development of the Australian Business Council for Sustainable Energy and took a leading role in promoting Australia's sustainable energy industry to government, industry and the wider community.
Additionally, Rupert volunteered in 1999 to become media adviser to East Timorese independence leader and current East Timor president, Jose Ramos Horta. As a member of the Olympic Environment Committee for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Rupert advised Olympic organizers on meeting the environmental guidelines set for the 2000 Games. He was invited to represent the Sustainable Energy industry at the Bali consultation for the review of the World Bank's involvement in the oil, gas and mining industries.
Rupert holds a Commerce Degree from the University of Western Australia and a Graduate Diploma in Journalism from Murdoch University.
