Overview
Philips, today one of the largest electronics companies in the world, started in 1891 as a manufacturer of carbon filament light bulbs. Since then it has brought countless innovations to the mass market such as the electric razor, the home radio, the television, and the world’s first home video cassette recorder.
The company is a market leader in medical diagnostic imaging and patient monitoring systems, energy efficient lighting solutions, personal care and home appliances, as well as consumer electronics. In 1982 it teamed up with Sony to create standards for Compact Discs and optical telecommunications systems – now a part of the internet – and, later, DVD and blu-ray.
The company has had a long tradition of stringent sustainability reporting since 1999. Philips lists sustainability as one of its eight key opportunities looking towards 2015 and now publishes an integrated annual financial, social and environmental report.
By signing the United Nations Global Compact in March 2007, Philips joined thousands of organizations from around the world to advance human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption.
The company’s EcoVision5 initiative makes a commitment to a number of environmentally positive improvements by 2015. For example, it aims to improve the energy efficiency of its product portfolio by 50% compared to 2009. It also aims to double both the amount of products collected for recycling, and the recycled materials in products by 2015 compared to 2009.
Philips was the first company to launch a LED TV free from hazardous PVC and BFRs, and has made further progress in sustainability in the last few years. In particular, by supporting the Individual Producer Responsibility principle, the company takes responsibility for the toxic impacts of its products on e-waste dumps around the world.
