Aragon
| Population: | 1.277 million (2007) |
|---|---|
| GHG Emissions: | 22.6 MtCO2e (2006) |
Targets and Goals
- Aragon's emissions reduction objectives are calculated on basis of Spain's Kyoto Protocol target (+15% under EU burden sharing), as well as the commitments under the EU Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) for sectors concerned.
- Aragon's diffuse sector emissions represent 52%. Aragon has set an objective of reducing 1.3 MtCO2e for 2008-2012 or 0.256 MtCO2e/year.
Top Actions
Renewable Energy
- The 2005-2010 Renewable Energy Plan aims for 12.1% of total energy consumption and 30.3% of electricity consumption to be supplied by renewable sources by 2010.
- The 2005-2010 Renewable Energy Plan aims for transport fuels to include a mix of 5.83% biofuels by 2010.
- The region grants subsidies to promote the development and introduction of renewable energy sources including biomass gasification and obtaining and using hydrogen or thermoelectric solar energy.
Clean Transport
- Aragon and the Institute of Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) grant subsidies for the improvement of the management of transport fleets by road and for the acquisition of private and industrial vehicles powered by bio-fuels on the basis of the energy efficiency improvements and energy savings that these generate. Currently the use of biofuels in official vehicles is 50%; the objective for 2012 is 100%.
Sustainable Land Use
- In 2007, 5.3 million trees were planted in the Autonomous Community of Aragon.
- Aragon has prepared a Campaign for Promoting and Training in Techniques of Efficient Energy Uses in Agriculture as part of the IDAE-Government of Aragon Agreement.
- Aragon is promoting the regional commercialization of products by means of Quality Labels, Denominations of Origin and campaigns such as Food Products of Aragon.
- The framework of the 2007-2013 Programme of Rural Development for Aragon offers investments in the agricultural and food industries that affect the transformation and/or commercialization of new products, processes and technologies related to biodiesel, bioethanol and biomass, among others.
Waste Management
- The Integral Waste Management Plan (GIRA 2005-2008) sets a series of measures that will enable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions. Actions include adopting sustainable practices of consumption of resources and waste management.
